1 Day Tour Full Service:
Includes: Private transport to and from the site, Lunch and Snacks, Guided tour in Spanish.
A 45 minute ride from Cochabamba leads up into the mountains and fertile fields of Colomi on the road towards Santa Cruz. In Colomi hikers disembark alongside Laguna Totorani in the mountains above Colomi at roughly 3000m. Bright potato flowers and other crops cover the surrounding hillsides. Hikers can perhaps visit a horse which has a small horn growing out of its head There you can converse with local campesinos and perhaps help harvest crops or share some chicha (local corn beer) as the begin the hike. From the laguna you begin upwards paralelling a series of small rapids and waterfalls on an ancient pre-incan stone pathway. This pathway leads up through a pine forest plantation often filled with whisps of cloud. An optional 1 hour detour takes hikers to a higher lagoon which locals believe to be haunted by a bull´s spirit who appears to people who come here alone and he drags them down into depths of the lake.
After about 2.5 hours of hiking the trip reaches the "Jukumari" summit. In good weather fine views reach out in all directions. You can see the old road to Chapari and the mountain range locals call K´enti. Next hikers begin to descend on a trail for a little over an hour until reaching a disused single track road. Hikers are now entering the Chapare Cloud Forest. You pass giant tubes that transport natural gas to Cochabamba. There is a small cave where ancient travelers would rest and the groups also takes a break here.
In this zone hikers see impressive wild orchids of many different varieties, giant ferns, and diverse species of butterflies. The calls of jungle birds come constantly and the temperature goes from the cold of the mountaintops to the warmth of the tropics. You pass natural springs and rivers. After about 2.5 hours on this road hikers reach the small village of Inca Chaca where an ancient incan bridge made out of natural fiber spanned a large river. From the town the group leaves to visit the nearby sites which takes about 45 minutes to reach. The ancient bridge eventually collapsed and now a metal hanging bridge spans the river. After the bridge the groups visits small waterfalls on the Inca Chaca river. The group vists the "Garanta del Diablo" of Devil´s Throat; giant rock caves from which the river emerges from the earth.
Next hikers visit the "Velo de la Novia" (Bride´s Vail) which is a small waterfall and the "Baño de las Ñustas" (Incan Princesses´ Baths) which is a large pool in which trekkers can swim and bathe. In this area hikers can see the ancient turbines that first brought electricity to Cochabamba. Returning, hikers climb a short hill called the "Caja de Agua" (The Water Box) where the ancient turbines were controlled from a small house. From here you can see an artificial lagoon which can optionally be visited in about 25 minutes. After this hikers descend to a trout farm and restuarant where hikers can enjoy freshly grilled trout in butter garlic or other suaces. Hikers then exit to the main road and are transported back to Cochabamba. The return trip in on the road takes about 2.5 hours. Total hiking time roughly 7.5 hours Total trip time to and from Cochabamba: roughly 10-11 hours.
